Although injuries such as these appear consistent with an attack on the sick and injured who had remained behind in the fort, there also was much evidence that the bodies had been mutilated:
The pattern of the cuts and slashes suggests strongly that these men were mutilated possibly to obtain trophies. . . . The head was taken from one man; scalps may have been taken from the others. . . . In all the men, ribs were cut or fractured at the sternal ends or sides, probably to obtain access to the chest cavity so the heart could be reached. The fact that the pubic area is cut in all of the men suggests genital mutilation. The extent of destruction in the abdominal and chest cavities indicates the men may also have been disemboweled.
